Hawks Nest Park is a recreation complex on Williams Lane adjacent to Bowen Elementary School in Hanahan. The 7.2-acre park features walking trails, playground, dog park, pickleball and volleyball courts, natural surface baseball field, and synthetic turf multi-use soccer/football field. SW+ is providing comprehensive master planning, civil engineering, and landscape architectural services to include schematic design, design development, permit coordination, construction documents, and construction phase services for this project.
This site was a former blast zone for the Naval Weapons Station. As a condition of sale, wetlands that bisected the site could not be impacted. This proved to be challenging because the park had to be designed, constructed, and ultimately used by the public from two different entrances. To further complicate construction, both points of access were through an adjacent elementary school. SW+ provided 2 construction access points and interconnected the site by spanning the wetland with a vehicular and pedestrian bridge, resulting in no wetland impacts. An additional pedestrian boardwalk provided more opportunities to cross the wetland and allowed convenient access to all areas of the park. The project team worked closely with the adjacent school to accommodate the school’s schedule, not only for daily operations, but also special events.
