In the early 2000s, Greenville County had the foresight to acquire and rehabilitate an existing railroad bed to create a shared-use path for bicycle and pedestrian use. SW+ assisted the County with public engagement to help build consensus for the greenway. Initial phases included removal of the old railroad ties, cleaning and reshaping the immediate trailside swales, and the installation of the asphalt trail surface, while providing low-impact development features where feasible.
In the years since, the SRT has become an explosive economic catalyst for development, community revitalization, and tourism throughout Greenville County, not only within the city limits, but also within the smaller communities along its route.
Phase 1 of the project included removal of the old railroad ties, cleaning and reshaping the immediate trailside swales, and the installation of the asphalt trail surface. SW+ successfully provided 100% stormwater treatment and storage on-site, along with the creation of numerous low impact development opportunities for Phase 2.
