There are some projects that seem to take on a life of their own. For SeamonWhiteside, Carolina Park in Mount Pleasant is at the top of the list. As our fifth Legacy Project in our blog series, Carolina Park is the perfect example of the type of spaces we love to create – those that fulfill every aspect of life. Our efforts at Carolina Park more than 20 years ago created a thriving community that allows residents the means to live, work, learn and play.
SeamonWhiteside was first contacted about taking on the role of master planner for Carolina Park back in 1990. The tract’s original owner, the late Ben Marino, envisioned the 1,700-acre property as an integrated community, not simply a housing tract, and looked to SW+ to help bring the design to life.
During the initial years of the project, SW+ worked with Marino and his partners to fine-tune the master plan into a living, breathing concept that incorporated single, multi-family and specialty residences, supported by a library, schools and fire station. Our team worked tirelessly with the Town of Mount Pleasant and Charleston County to craft a plan that would work for municipal leaders, the development team, the ownership and the public.
Over the years, SW+ has completed numerous subdivision layouts, engineered miles of roads, designed streetscape and utility infrastructure, and shepherded dozens of permits through the regulatory process. Today, we continue to carry Marino’s vision forward with help from the property’s new, dynamic ownership, Carolina Park Development, LLC, national home builders, commercial development companies and the Town of Mount Pleasant.
