Think Warm Thoughts Cuz Baby It’s Cold Out There

Being part of the Deep South, South Carolina is not known for freezing rain, sleet, and snow but that is what’s in store for us this week. One of the best ways to survive this atypical weather (other than snuggly blankets and hot chocolate), is to bask in memories of lazy hours around the pool or out on the lake with a rod and reel. SW+ has built a portfolio of amenity centers, playgrounds, and athletic fields, all of which are fantastic places to enjoy the blue skies and warm temps.

Carolina Park Amenity Complex
Carolina Park Development, LLCcarolinaParkAmenity

Designed for the residential mixed use neighborhood, the amenity complex at Carolina Park in Mount Pleasant
offers residents quite a few leisure activities. In addition to the gorgeous 25-meter, 6-lane swimming pool, the
amenities complex features an outdoor kitchen and pavilion, a community fire pit, a large pool deck, tennis courts and a tot-lot. A well-appointed bathhouse/changing room facility is also on site. SW+ has been a part of the Carolina Park development for more than 20 years.

Green Pond Landing Event Center, Lake Hartwell
Anderson County, SC

Anglers Rejoice! Bassmasters Classic is on its way back to South Carolina for the 2015 tournament. Lake Hartwell played host to the premier fishing even in 2008 and we are stoked that once again, Anderson County and the City of Greenville will have that honor. SW+ worked alongside county staff, and marine engineering consultant, Applied Technology & Management to renovate and expand the site into a facility that can support a large event and that can be used by everyone.

The community recreation area is composed of a 4,200 sq. ft. swimming pool, oyster pit, covered picnic area, patio seating, and playground. The facility is a natural venue for parties and family gatherings and is very popular among residents.

Projects: The Boulevard

Following the Coleman Boulevard design guidelines written by SW+A’s urban edge studio and expertly crafted into an overlay ordinance by the Town of Mount Pleasant, The Boulevard represents the first mixed-use parking garage oriented project to be built on Coleman Boulevard!

One of the challenges when developing infill projects is typically the amount of space you have to work with. This was definitely the case with The Boulevard. While the new overlay zoning allows higher density, the design maintains a balance between offering more living space with increased public space along Coleman and the creation of quality open space within the project.

SW+A approached this challenge by utilizing our stormwater ponds as amenities that contributed to the open space and overall aesthetic of the project. We also used pervious pavers as part of the drainage solution. It is important to test the soils for good infiltration rates in order for pervious pavers to work effectively. SW+A looks forward to more infill projects where we can employ innovative design and engineering techniques that will contribute to a great public realm.
